Both U.S. and European equities rallied on Monday as positive U.S. manufacturing data were published and the result of Spanish bank’s stress-test bolstered confidence in Spain’s banking system. Index of U.S. factory activity rose to a surprising reading of 51.5 in September and thus showed expansion in the sector for the first time since May. European markets were pulled up mainly by financial shares as a result of the report (released on Friday after market hours) saying that Spanish banks will need 59.3 billion euros (($77 billion) in extra capital and showing that troubles in the sector were no worse than feared.
The DJ30 closed at 13,515.11, gaining 77.98 points (0.58%), SPX500 closed at 1,444.49 gaining 3.82 points (0.27%) and the NASDAQ100 closed at 2,794.28, declining 4.91 points (-0.18%) in today’s trading.
The CAC40 closed at 3,434.98, gaining 80.16 points (2.39%), FTSE100 closed at 5,820.45, gaining 78.38 points (1.37%) and DAX40 closed at 7,326.73, gaining 110.58 points (+1.53%).
Microsoft Corp (MSFT) is said to be launching its own news service later this month. The service is to be part of the new looking MSN website and should be released together with launch of Windows 8. According to Bob Visse, general manager at MSN Product Management Group, Microsoft is making “big, multi-million dollar investment” to create a “decent-sized media operation”. MSN website is visited by about 480 million users each month worldwide and alongside with Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) and AOL it is one of the biggest portals on internet.
