U.S. indices were mixed in Tuesday’s volatile session as markets lost earlier gains after Mariano Rajoy, Spanish Prime Minister, said a request for European rescue funds was not imminent. Negative sentiment was also enhanced by investors’ worries about the third-quarter unemployment data coming on Friday.
European shares slipped as concerns about weakening global growth negatively influenced sentiment in the market. Investors are expecting the third-quarter earnings season data to be negative.
The DJ30 closed at 13,482.36, declining 32.75 points (-0.24%), SPX500 closed at 1,445.75 gaining 1.26 points (0.09%) and the NASDAQ100 closed at 2,799.29, gaining 5.01 points (0.18%) in today’s trading.
The CAC40 closed at 3,414.23, declining 20.75 points (-0.60%), FTSE100 closed at 5,809.45, declining 11.00 points (-0.19%) and DAX40 closed at 7,305.86, declining 20.87 points (-0.28%).
Google Inc. (GOOG) is currently in the process of acquiring Viewdle, an Ukranian firm who specializes in facial recognition software for more than $30 million, according to Forbes magazine. This acquisition will provide Google with a large portfolio of patents but also image recognition and technology related to augmented reality. Viewdle, a start-up, has been searching for a buyer since 2011, as it faces financially difficulties and is in need of immediate cash infusion to make progress. Google has already purchased a similar company Neven Vision in 2006, whose employees were transferred into its Picasa division.
