On Wednesday European and U.S. indices slipped as violent anti-austerity protests in South Europe renewed the turbulence in the euro zone regarding the financial bailouts. Investors locked in profits from recent gains, as uncertainty keeps hovering over Spain, on worries about Madrid’s commitment to reform due to violent protests. Furthermore a general strike in Greece, and signs of disagreement among top euro zone officials over ways to tackle the crisis, added to investor concerns about the growing uncertainty in Europe. Markets have been seeking new catalysts to keep pushing shares higher ever since the ECB and U.S. Federal Reserve announced stimulus measures this month.
The DJ30 closed at 13,413.51, declining 44.04 points (-0.33%), SPX500 closed at 1,433.32 declining 8.27 points (-0.57%) and the NASDAQ closed at 2,781.63, declining 22.90 points (-0.82%) in today’s trading.
The CAC40 closed at 3,414.84, declining 98.97 points (-2.82%), FTSE100 closed at 5,768.09, declining 91.62 points (-1.56%) and DAX40 closed at 7,276.51, declining 140.60 points (-2%).
Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) had another successful iPhone launch, selling 5 million units of the new iPhone 5 during the first weekend surpassing the 4 million units sold in the first 3 days of the release of iPhone 4S. The 5 million sold units of the iPhone 5 accounts only for the amount Apple was able to ship to its customers. Rumors say that the pre-order numbers could be much higher however, due to limits in supply the company wasn’t able to account for those units that have not been delivered yet. The quarterly financial report that the company is expected to announce, will provide a better picture of the devices sold. Furthermore as the holiday season is just around the corner, Apple could set another record sale as most of their product line has undergone substantial changes this year. Apple Inc. (AAPL) closed at $ 665.18, declining 8.36 points (-1.24%).
