Today we\u2019ll get down to the basics: Support and resistance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For as many algorithms and gizmos available today, some of the most tried and true forms of technical analysis showcase simplicity at their core. Ultimately, technical analysis is about understanding how buyers and sellers behave at certain prices or levels. Support and resistance are the most basic \u2014 and arguably the most important \u2014 tools for doing that.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Support<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an area where buyers have historically stepped in.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Resistance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an area where sellers have historically taken control.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Lines vs. Zones (A Common Beginner Mistake)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most common mistakes new traders make is drawing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perfectly precise<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lines. In reality, support and resistance may be better viewed as <\/span><b>zones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Remember, markets are not always perfect or exact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Example: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine a stock that has bounced multiple times between $98 and $100. Instead of drawing a single line at $99.37, it may be more useful to mark a $98 to $100 support zone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Role Reversal<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most powerful concepts in technical analysis is <\/span><b>role reversal. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a key concept, not just because it could mark a notable shift in the trade setup, but because it\u2019s often used as a form of risk management.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A former support level, once broken, can become resistance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A former resistance level, once reclaimed, can become support.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Example: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a stock trades sideways below $50 for months and repeatedly fails there, $50 becomes resistance. Nvidia eventually broke out over this level before gaining even more momentum. However, after <\/span><b>support<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> failed, this level turned into <\/span><b>resistance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Source: eToro ProCharts, courtesy of TradingView.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alphabet is a great example of two things: A breakout over <\/span><b>prior resistance <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that turns into <\/span><b>current support<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the fact that this analysis can apply broadly over multiple timeframes \u2014 anything from the weekly chart down to a 30-minute chart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the weekly chart above, notice how prior resistance in the $140 to $150 area \u2014 which marked Alphabet\u2019s record highs from the prior bull market \u2014 became a key breakout area in April 2024. But then notice how this zone was support on ensuing pullbacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Bottom Line<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While fundamental analysis might help determine <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to buy, investors who infuse technical analysis into their market evaluations can help use it to determine when to get in and \u2014 perhaps more notably \u2014 when to get out of their positions.
