{"id":889505,"date":"2024-05-21T16:08:15","date_gmt":"2024-05-21T13:08:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.etoro.com\/?p=889505"},"modified":"2025-11-21T13:15:42","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T11:15:42","slug":"retail-traders-turn-to-options-for-portfolio-diversification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.etoro.com\/en-us\/news-and-analysis\/latest-news\/press-release\/retail-traders-turn-to-options-for-portfolio-diversification\/","title":{"rendered":"Retail traders turn to options for portfolio diversification"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retail investors\u2019 primary motivation in options trading is portfolio diversification (32%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retail investors embrace market volatility, with 62% trading options more frequently since the Covid-19 pandemic<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">82% turn to social circles for guidance and inspiration when trading options<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Options traders also invest in stocks (65%), cryptoassets (41%), and bonds (28%)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>May 21, 2024<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 According to a survey of American retail investors by trading and investing platform eToro, their primary reason for trading options was portfolio strategy diversification (32%), or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0implementing a particular trading strategy or approach.\u00a0 The survey found that the top three assets retail options traders are most likely to also invest in as a buy and hold strategy, are stocks (65%), cryptoassets (41%), and bonds (28%).\u00a0 In addition, among retail traders short term returns are no longer the leading use case of options, instead they\u2019re seeking to enhance their overall investment strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the COVID-19 pandemic, 62% of investors surveyed reported an increase in options trading activity compared to just 5% who have stopped trading options altogether.\u00a0 Furthermore, 61% of traders feel that through learned experience, they understand the risks of options and are more confident in their ability to mitigate downside risks.\u00a0 Meanwhile, only 15% of respondents reported feeling less comfortable taking risks.\u00a0 As with other survey findings from eToro of retail investors, there is a growing sophistication in their skills, at least by their own estimation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Commenting on the data, eToro Investment Analyst Bret Kenwell said<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFollowing the COVID-19 pandemic where options volumes skyrocketed due to meme-stock activity and a strong bull market, retail traders developed a reputation for using short-sighted \u2018short-squeeze\u2019 strategies to take advantage of markets.\u00a0 Even if they may have entered the arena for the short term as a part of their strategy, it\u2019s clear that retail investors haven\u2019t been scared off by the market volatility and macroeconomic uncertainty of recent years. In fact, retail traders are sticking around and learning from their experience.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to seeking inspiration and guidance for options trading, 82% of retail traders turn to their social networks (friends &amp; family, social media, and online forums).\u00a0 Other top sources included their own analysis (48%) and media outlets (36%) such as news channels, financial websites and podcasts.\u00a0 Men reported higher levels of confidence in their own analysis (51%) compared to women (43%).\u00a0 Women turn to professionals in the media (39%) compared to men (35%), signaling there\u2019s work to be done around womens\u2019 confidence in their own analytical abilities. However, women are catching up, 46% of the women surveyed began trading options in the past three years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bret Kenwell commented:<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cRetail traders are evolving in how they use options. Traders have a focus on diversification, incorporating options as an alternative strategy among larger portfolio themes. Furthermore, they\u2019re using a variety of strategies, such as credit spreads, showing a focus on \u2018base hits\u2019 rather than \u2018home run\u2019 trades. That said, many options traders are still relatively new to trading and as a result it\u2019s not surprising that they\u2019re most often turning to social networks for inspiration. The survey was conducted from April 29th \u2013 May 1st 2024 carried out by research company Appinio. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retail investors were defined as self-directed or advised and had to hold at least one investment product including shares, bonds, funds, investment ISAs or equivalent.
