Welltower, Inc. is a real estate investment trust (REIT) that focuses on providing and establishing healthcare infrastructure consisting mainly of senior housing, post-acute care providers, and health systems. Founded in 1970, the company was originally known as Health Care Fund and then as Health Care REIT before changing its name to Welltower, Inc. in 2015. With its headquarters in Toledo, Ohio, the company operates in the US, Canada, and the UK. Welltower’s international expansion came after it acquired Chartwell and Sunrise Senior Living in 2012.
The company operates through three segments, namely Seniors Housing Operating, Post-Acute Care, and Outpatient Medical. The Seniors Housing Operating division focuses on seniors housing communities for independent living, assisted living, and memory care. These centres aim to assist with activities of daily living to encourage mobility and socialisation. Welltower’s Post-Acute Care division provides post-acute care facilities, assisted living facilities, continuing care communities, and care homes and independent support living facilities in the UK and Canada, respectively. Some of the care homes include also provide nursing services. The Outpatient Medical segment offers outpatient medical facilities.
Welltower is an S&P 500 company. The organisation further expanded by entering into a partnership with ProMedica and acquiring Quality Care Properties and HCR ManorCare for $4.4bn in 2018. Welltower trades on the NYSE using the WELL ticker.
