Denny's Corp. is an American diner-style restaurant chain headquartered in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The company operates through more than 1,700 franchised, licensed, and company restaurants with the vast majority in the United States, although there are around 145 international Denny’s venues around the world. The firm has been in operation since 1953, when founders Harold Butler and Richard Jezak opened their first restaurant, then called Danny’s Donuts, in Lakewood, California.
In 1956, Danny’s Donuts was rebranded to Danny’s Coffee Shops and stayed open around the clock as most Denny’s restaurants still are today. The firm became Denny’s Coffee Shops in 1959, and eventually simply Denny’s in 1960. The restaurant chain quickly expanded across the US and opened its first international venue in 1967 in Acapulco, Mexico.
Denny’s was formerly owned by a parent company named Advantica Restaurant Group Inc., but the parent company itself was renamed Denny’s Corporation in 2002 to reflect the single brand focus of the group. The firm launched an online ordering platform, Denny’s On Demand, in 2017, and two virtual brands, The Burger Den and The Meltdown, in 2021. The firm went public in 1968 and trades on the NASDAQ, where it is listed under the stock ticker DENN.
