The company was established in April 2005 by founders Xueling Li and Jun Lei and went on to be listed on the NASDAQ for the first time in November 2012. The company operates in 30 cities throughout the world, including Los Angeles, Beijing, London, Tokyo, and Cairo. While JOYY Inc. operates globally, its headquarters can be found in Singapore.

JOYY Inc. runs several social media platforms, such as the gaming platform Hago, the short video community Likee, and live streaming platform Bigo Live. As of July 2022, JOYY inc. employs approximately 7,900 workers across its operations, with roughly 44% of personnel working within the company's research and development departments across six global R&D centres.

The company utilises artificial intelligence technology throughout their social media platforms as part of its core strategy. As of July 2022, the company estimates that they have attracted around 300 million users across 150 different markets. JOYY Inc. trades on the NASDAQ stock exchange using the stock ticker YY.
