After all the rumour and hype, Facebook $FB (Facebook) has shared its Libra whitepaper covering their cryptographic-based vision for a simple global currency and financial infrastructure that empowers billions of people.
Libra is mainly targeting the 1.7 billion unbanked adults globally, reduction of cash-based transactions (85% according to Libra), the high fees that incur with payments and the long processing durations of cross border transactions.
There is a lot of online chatter by various experts sharing their views on these recent developments along with individual views about this project, but it is clear that the change in the payments/transactions ecosystem is inevitable. Many see this as a mainstream endorsement of cryptocurrencies, rather than just embracing blockchain technology.
Both the FuturePayments and MobilePayments portfolios reflect this disruption (each with its personalized view on the role of Crypto’s and physical forms of usage) and several participants in these portfolios are association members in the Libra project $MA (Mastercard) $PYPL (PayPal Holdings) $V. We can definitely state that Libra is a unique cross-sector, cross-brand mutual effort to develop a financial infrastructure and that reflects a big shift in the way disruption is being executed compared with a single effort by a young start-up. As such the potential impact can be overwhelming and is something worth following.
We at eToro will continuously monitor these developments by Facebook going beyond this whitepaper and consider their allocation in these portfolios, having an impact in the digital payments industry. In 2020 a viable product is expected to be rolled out as part of this process.
