I welcome my new copier @Leoleo62 . If you have any questions, feel free to ask. As a value investor, you would think that I like seeing companies paying dividends but that's not the case. The amount of money generated by a company from its normal operation is called its operating cash flow. For example, last year $AAPL (Apple) had $77 Billions in operating cash flow. After spending around $16 billions on capital expenditure(to maintain the current state of the tangible assets), $61 billions is left and that is called the free cash flow. FCF is the best measure we can use to know if a company should be paying dividends and by how much. It is hard for $AAPL to reinvest that amount of money in the business. It is too much so they have the following options: 1. Investment 2. share buybacks 3. dividends Most companies are going to buy other marketable securities such as bonds but they could also acquire another company. Coming back to Apple, they didn't too much money lately and preferred to buyback their own shares which was at a discount. They spent around $72 billions on buybacks. If there is still money left, then only should the company pay dividends and Apple paid $13 billions in dividends last year. Unfortunately, most company are not Apple and cannot afford to do that. Most company actually should not be buying back their shares and paying dividends but instead reinvest it in the company itself. Let's take for example $BMW.DE (Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft), they paid over $2 billions in dividends last year out of $6 billions in net income. They could have used that money instead to develop new electric vehicles. And another important things companies should be doing when buying back their own shares is to make sure they are not overpaying for. For example, last year $GOOG (Alphabet) bought back its shares at over 30X earnings. Warren Buffett always said to his managers that he doesn't expect any dividends from them unless the money cannot be used otherwise and he told the same thing to the shareholders of $BRK.B (Berkshire Hathaway Inc) . That's why he doesn't pay dividends because he can employ the money elsewhere. As far as buybacks are concerned, he is fan of them but only when they are at a discount. TO MY COPIERS Last 3 days, $GER30 go exactly opposite way I thoutght it would. Luckily for us, I didn't use high leverage, so we should be safe. I am also quite confident that we will eventualy close this position in profit. (We need $GER30 to reach only 10700). We cannot be always right in our decisions, that is why I'm using low leverage, so we would not have to worry, if we do not select right directions right away. have a nice day and be patience, we will see our investments in profit. May te force be with us:D Filip ... Show More
