UAE STOCKS — A LOOK AT THIS MARKET In recent days, while discussing with some of you, I was asked to take a look at several companies from the United Arab Emirates available on eToro. It is not a small market: on eToro there are more than 70 companies listed between Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Analyzing all of them would take quite a lot of time, so for an initial screening I also relied on artificial intelligence. From a sector perspective the market is quite particular. There isn’t the same variety you typically find in Western markets: many companies operate in energy, banking, financial holdings and especially real estate. There are also some companies connected to mobility, taxi services, toll systems and even the private education sector. Let’s look at some of the companies that emerged from this first analysis. ADNOC Gas (ADNOCG) It is one of the main energy companies in the UAE and manages a large part of the infrastructure related to the processing and distribution of natural gas within the ADNOC group. Its competitive advantage comes from access to the country’s vast gas reserves and control of strategic energy infrastructure. First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB) It is the largest bank in the United Arab Emirates by assets and operates in several countries across the Middle East, Europe and Asia. Its size and strong links with the local economy give it access to large institutional and corporate clients. Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB) One of the country’s main banks, active in retail lending, corporate banking and financial services. Its competitive advantage lies in its strong domestic presence and its central role in financing the UAE economy. Emaar Properties (EMAAR) One of the largest real estate developers in the Middle East and the group behind iconic projects such as the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall. Its competitive advantage is a very strong brand in high-end real estate and access to Dubai’s major urban development projects. Aldar Properties (ALDAR) The leading real estate developer in Abu Dhabi, with activities ranging from residential projects to commercial properties, hotels and shopping malls. Its competitive advantage comes from its close integration with the emirate’s urban development plans. Multiply Group (MULTIPLY) An investment holding company with stakes in several sectors including media, mobility, technology and services. Its competitive advantage lies in its ability to allocate capital into growing businesses with the support of large local institutional investors. Salik Company (SALIK) It manages Dubai’s road toll system. The business model is very simple: it collects toll revenues from the city’s urban highway network. Its competitive advantage is essentially a regulated monopoly over a key infrastructure for city mobility. Dubai Taxi Company (DTC) A leading operator in taxi and mobility services in Dubai, with a large fleet and services that include taxis, limousine services and airport transportation. Its competitive advantage comes from operating concessions in one of the most touristic and busy cities in the Middle East. Taaleem Holdings (TAALEEM) A company operating in the private education sector in the UAE, running international schools attended by both residents and expatriates. Its competitive advantage comes from the strong demand for private education in an increasingly international population. Personally, I will continue studying these companies carefully to understand whether any of them could become interesting from a long-term investment perspective. My first impression is that the sector choice is quite limited. Many banks operate under Islamic finance principles, which follow different rules compared with the Western financial system, so additional study is needed to properly interpret their financial statements. On the energy side I prefer to observe the situation calmly before making any decisions, while in sectors such as taxis, toll systems or education it takes deeper analysis of the local context to clearly understand the real competitive advantages. This evening, as every Monday, I will also publish the usual portfolio update with an overview of the latest movements and the opportunities I am currently observing. Have a great day everyone @LucaMulargiu
