$AAPL (Apple) launching “Apple Business” right after blowing up the low-end laptop market with the Neo might be one of the biggest existential threats to $MSFT (Microsoft) core business since $GOOG (Alphabet) launched Docs. As always, everything will depend on execution. But as far as strategy goes, 2026 seems to be the year Apple shoots straight into Microsoft’s heart. 2025 was marked by Apple fumbling AI so bad that every other successful AI start-up announced themselves as “what Siri should have been”. Only to surprise everyone with the most efficient hardware for the development of local decentralised AI models, with M5 blowing everyone else out of the water, people stacking them and discovering they’re more performant than $NVDA (NVIDIA Corporation) racks of GPUs, and Sillicon Valley running out of Mac Minis because everyone and their mother is making their own OpenClaw personal assistant. Apple is supporting the development of local LLMs by providing cost-efficient, high-end and modular hardware that can compete with the big boys. That while they’re literally trying to eat Microsoft’s lunch. Pulling this off can be the closest they’ve ever been to live up to the ideal of their 1984 ad.
