Warren Buffett's $BRK.B (Berkshire Hathaway Inc) reported operating profit growing in the fourth quarter to $8.48 billion, compared to $6.63 billion in the same period last year.
The company's liquidity reached a new record at 167.6 billion. Berkshire reported net earnings of $37.6 billion in the quarter, larger than a year earlier, helped by higher interest rates.
Berkshire's earnings are always closely monitored as an indicator of US economic health, due to the expansive nature of its businesses. Berkshire often recommends investors look beyond investment gains or losses, which are tied to accounting rules, arguing they can be misleading.
Warren Buffett continues to rely on share buybacks, which he says benefits shareholders. The company spent $2.2 billion on buybacks in the fourth quarter, bringing the total for the year to about $9.2 billion.
