The macro environment remains dominated by mixed signals, but I continue to see more risks than opportunities. The end of the record shutdown in the United States (43 days), while positive, leaves behind a significant legacy: delayed economic data, a compromised quarter, and greater uncertainty for the Fed. The lack of updated inflation and employment statistics has made it harder to interpret the real state of the economy, to the point that the probability of a rate cut in December is now estimated at around 50%.
On the real-economy side, the impact is not negligible: up to 750,000 federal employees affected, a Q4 GDP contraction between โ0.7% and โ1.4%, and roughly $11 billion in permanently lost economic activity.
Even without these effects, the overall picture shows more weaknesses than strengths: elevated valuations in U.S. large caps, structural slowdown in several leading indicators, the recent downgrade of U.S. sovereign debt, and a Fed that remains uncertain in reading the broader outlook.
In this scenario, I maintain a cautious stance focused on companies with strong moats, solid balance sheets, and sustainable valuations. I prefer to avoid euphoria in a market that continues to price in a best-case scenario, and the portfolio will remain in a more defensive phase until conditions become clearer. That said, itโs still possible to achieve strong results even in uncertain periodsโwhat matters is sticking to a solid strategy and taking advantage of pullbacks to accumulate quality.
A quick note on the crypto market as well: Bitcoin has lost the key 100k support, confirming a weaker sentiment and a context that requires caution.
