I closed half of our holdings in $ASTS (AST SpaceMobile Inc) . Over the last 3 months it had gone up more than 1100% and peaked at nearly 15% of total portfolio equity. Given that they haven’t even got the first commercial satellites launched (that’s due to happen next month), and they were getting a lot of attention from meme stock buyers, and they still need another $1+ billion to complete their constellation, and they have to operate it successfully once on orbit (even experienced operators like Eutelsat and SES have had issues over the last couple of years), the stock price was getting into very risky territory so this was a risk management decision with risk being a more important factor than tax efficiency. It’s rare for me to close a position only 6 months after opening it and not get the tax benefits of holding for a minimum of 12 months. Fund manager and Stanford economics lecturer Kevin Mak shared his thoughts on ASTS and risk management after the market closed on Friday, that I largely agree with, starting a thread which I think is worth reading - twitter.com/KevinLMak/status/1824445279187128791 This ASTS position was opened at $2.995 using ~0.81% of total portfolio equity and closed at $32.1206 representing ~6.8% of total equity with a gain of 972.5%. I also closed our position in LLAP (Terran Orbital) because their Q2 report showed that the $2.4 billion Rivada contract had been removed from the backlog making it clear that the most important part of my investment thesis hadn’t worked out. It’s important to recognize when you’re wrong and get out quickly – I managed to beat most of the market to the exit as it appears they hadn’t read the 10-Q SEC filing and only found out later when an article was published by SpaceNews. We ended down (-12.5%) having opened at $0.694 and closed at $0.6072 using ~ 0.63% of total portfolio equity so the loss was very small. LLAP ended the week down more than (-64%) landing at the new buyout price offered by $LMT (Lockheed Martin Corporation) of $0.25, so we’ll likely end up owning it again indirectly once LMT completes the acquisition – at least the LMT buyout part of my thinking came true. If any new copiers are interested, you can see my original LLAP investment rationale at etoro.tw/4cqjXs4 and you can see how the closing decision and process unfolded in the post and comments at etoro.tw/46NlpmV I also opened a new position in $IDR.MC (Indra Sistemas SA) using ~0.84% of total equity. These transactions left us with an end-of-week cash balance of 32.69% (www.etoro.com/people/space-investor/portfolio/chart/allocation ) making this the 4th week in a row that our cash balance has grown to a new all time high. The main reason the cash balance has grown so much in recent weeks is not because I’m worried about a market correction or crash, but because multiple momentum investments lost their momentum and triggered their trailing stops while prices have remained above my maximum purchase price on many stocks. I currently have over 20 limit orders in place to open new positions when prices are right. 23 of our 28 holdings had gains this week. 🟢 $ASTS gained 46.30%. They published their Q2 2024 results with these numbers compared to the same quarter last year ($ in millions): Continued in the comments...
