As we close out 2025, I would like to share a brief year-end update. The year brought several surprises and overall proved to be a solid equity year. While the result came in below my initial expectations, I am comfortable finishing the year with a total portfolio return of +8.75%.
Due to the weaker performance of cryptocurrencies during the full period of 2025, the crypto portion of my portfolio gradually declined and currently stands at 18.88 %. This level reflects the natural evolution of the allocation rather than an active reduction, and I feel comfortable maintaining it for now. I do not plan to increase crypto exposure unless market conditions clearly support such a move.
To better isolate and understand the equity performance, I would like to share a purely hypothetical calculation. This is not a value judgement on crypto, but a simplified exercise to illustrate how the stock component performed on its own:
Total portfolio return in 2025: +8.75%
Based on end-of-year crypto values and their approximate annual performance (Bitcoin −6.2%, Ethereum −22.46%, altcoins roughly −55%), the weighted average crypto return for 2025 is approximately −19.2%.
Given the total portfolio return of +8.75%, it follows that the crypto allocation was higher at the beginning of the year than the current 18.88%. Using a weighted back-calculation, the start-of-year allocation can be estimated at approximately 26.8% crypto and 73.2% equities.
The implied equity-only performance is then derived from the portfolio return equation:
Total return = (Equity weight × Equity return) + (Crypto weight × Crypto return)
8.75% = (73.2% × Equity return) + (26.8% × −19.2%)
This results in an implied equity-only performance of approximately +20.5% for 2025.
For context, in 2025 the S&P 500 returned 16.65%, while the Nasdaq-100 gained 20.38%.
Therefore the isolated equity performance would therefore be very comparable to the two.
