With a single click, you can mimic the strategies of top performers and potentially ride their wave of success. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: choosing the right trader to copy is anything but trivial. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 “𝗕𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁” 𝗜𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 eToro's “𝗕𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁” carousel - which showcases traders who have outperformed the S&P 500 over the past 12 months - might seem like a helpful shortcut. After all, what better endorsement could there be than beating the benchmark? 𝙐𝙣𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙪𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙮, 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙤𝙤𝙡 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙗𝙚 𝙚𝙭𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜. Outperforming the market over a single year is shockingly easy, especially in volatile or speculative environments. A trader who placed the right bet on a handful of cryptocurrencies ( $BTC $SOL $ETH $ADA ) at the right time could easily have eclipsed the $SPX500 with minimal skill involved. In fact, a monkey randomly picking tech stocks in a bull run might show the same performance. The real challenge isn’t beating the market once - it’s doing it consistently. 𝘽𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙬𝙤 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙖 𝙧𝙤𝙬? 𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙧𝙖𝙧𝙚. 𝘿𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙛𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙚𝙘𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙨? 𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙢 𝙤𝙛 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙧𝙨. 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗞𝗮𝗵𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗝𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 As Nobel Prize-winning psychologist and behavioral economist Daniel Kahneman pointed out, the year-over-year correlation in investment performance among individual traders tends toward zero. In simpler terms, a trader's success in one year says very little about their ability to succeed the next year. In most cases, luck plays a far larger role than skill - particularly over short timeframes. This insight should radically change how we approach the selection of traders to copy. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗙𝗼𝗿 When evaluating a trader on eToro, I take a much more conservative and long-term approach. Here are my personal guidelines: 5-𝙔𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙤𝙣 I don’t consider copying anyone who hasn’t been on the platform for at least five years. I compare their annual returns to the S&P 500 over each of those years - not just cumulatively, but year by year. 𝙑𝙤𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 & 𝙍𝙞𝙨𝙠 𝙈𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙨 It’s not just about return. I analyze drawdowns, Sharpe ratios, and volatility. A trader who achieved high returns by taking reckless risks is more likely to eventually implode. 𝘾𝙧𝙮𝙥𝙩𝙤 𝙀𝙭𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚 < 10% If more than 10% of their portfolio is allocated to cryptocurrencies, I move on. Crypto allocations can significantly distort returns, and often do not reflect broader investing acumen. 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙙𝙚 𝙁𝙧𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙮 & 𝙋𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙎𝙞𝙯𝙞𝙣𝙜 I look at how frequently they trade and whether they overconcentrate on specific positions. High-frequency trading and large single-stock exposures are red flags in a long-term portfolio. 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙮 & 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙮 Does the trader offer commentary or insight into their strategy? Those who share reasoning for their moves (especially in drawdowns) show maturity and discipline - traits that are far more predictive of long-term success than past returns. 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝙎𝙪𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙫𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝘽𝙞𝙖𝙨 Traders who blew up their accounts are no longer listed. What you see in the “Beat the Market” list is the polished tip of the iceberg - the survivors. But many traders with similarly aggressive bets failed and disappeared. This skews perception. 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢 𝙄𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙨 It’s important to remember that platforms like eToro benefit when traders gain followers. There may be subtle (or not-so-subtle) incentives to promote high-performing profiles without adequately emphasizing sustainability or risk. 𝘿𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝘾𝙤𝙥𝙮 - 𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣 Lastly, the ultimate goal of social investing should not be passive imitation, but active learning. A trader worth copying should not only produce results but also teach you something about risk management, portfolio diversification, and market psychology. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 Copy trading is an exciting innovation, but it demands the same diligence as picking a financial advisor or fund manager. Don’t be seduced by short-term charts or flashy returns. Look for consistency, transparency, and a philosophy that matches your own risk tolerance and time horizon. As Kahneman wisely taught us, luck is indistinguishable from skill in the short run.
