United agreed a deal for a minimum of three years with the U.S. technology firm in September 2023, and this came into force at the beginning of the 2024-25 season with Snapdragon, a subsidiary of Qualcomm, becoming the club’s new front-of-shirt sponsor. The Athletic reported last week the two-year option to extend the deal was set to be triggered, one year ahead of schedule, after United’s new chief executive Omar Berrada met Snapdragon chief marketing officer Don McGuire in Los Angeles and the Premier League club’s executive leadership visited Qualcomm HQ with members of the first team in San Diego. The deal is worth $75million per year to sponsor United’s men’s and women’s teams, as well as the club’s academy kits. The extension will bring the overall value of Snapdragon’s investment in United to $375m over a five-year period. Snapdragon produces the chips or processors found in an estimated three billion devices globally, across smartphones, PCs, virtual reality, gaming and cars, while Qualcomm is a company which manufactures telecommunications hardware. As part of Qualcomm’s sponsorship, The Athletic reported United will also have a back-of-shirt sponsor for the first time in the club’s history this season. Qualcomm’s sponsorship saw it acquire a category which afforded permission to promote the hardware that Snapdragon powers or brands that Snapdragon work alongside. United’s previous sponsor TeamViewer, a Germany-based software firm, announced in 2022 that it did not intend to renew its deal with United — a five-year agreement which began in 2021 worth £47m per annum. United and TeamViewer reached an agreement that provided the club with the option to buy back the rights to their front-of-shirt sponsorship. The club then activated the mutual agreement to move TeamViewer from shirt sponsor to global partner.
