Lots of news this week on the markets, we will take stock of the current tensions: .📌 Geopolitical news .⚡ Russia's war in Ukraine seems to be going on: - For Westerners, the Russian army is running out of everything (logistics, etc.) - For the Kremlin, the Russian Army is moving slowly to save as many civilian lives as possible. .⚡ Joe Biden raises his voice...against Beijing - While the United States seems to let Europe have its way with Russia and Ukraine, Joe Biden turns to Chinese leader Xi Jinping: The United States wants to officially force China to “tackle” Russia. Initially without success. .💡 Things are more complex than that: - The Chinese are far from being fervent supporters of the Russian invasion of Ukraine - China has strong economic partnerships with Ukraine - The Chinese want to continue to trade with the Ukrainians and the Russians as well - Biden has a very aggressive rhetoric both towards Putin, who is described as a War Criminal, and towards China. -> China's attitude will be decisive .📌 Economic news Russia finally escapes defaulting on interest payments on two bonds totaling $117 million as of March 16. .📌 Monetary news .⚡ The Bank of England raised its key rate by 25 basis points, with a key rate of 0.75%. .⚡ The Federal Reserve (USA) raised rates by 25 basis points on Wednesday, with a key rate of 0.25%. .💡 Before the invasion of Ukraine the markets expected 50 basis points to rise. .💡 James Bullard, President of the FED of Saint-Louis had voted for an increase of 50 points and is campaigning for 10 rate increases (there are currently 7 rate increases planned by the FED) so that the key rates reach the 3% level as quickly as possible, in order to combat inflation. On the China side .⚡ The Chinese authorities pledged on Wednesday to ensure the stability of the financial markets and worked to resolve the crisis in the Chinese real estate sector. .💡 They also supported the principle of listing Chinese companies abroad, an about-face after months of pressure on companies present on Wall Street. .💡 According to the New China agency, China and the United States are working on a compromise that would clear the horizon of Chinese companies listed in New York, currently threatened with delisting. .✔️ The effect was drastic on the big Chinese names on Wall Street, first and foremost the e-commerce giants BABA (+17.82%), PDD (+39.29%) or JD.US ( +26.62%). .📌 Health news The Covid is making headlines again with an explosion in the number of new cases in China, which has implemented containments very hard in many cities: today nearly 17 million Chinese are confined to Shenzhen for example. .💡 The risk is to start again on shortages of all kinds of products from China while the prices of raw materials are under pressure due to the Russo-Ukrainian conflict .📌 Conclusion The markets rebounded really well well beyond analysts' expectations, but: - The conflict with Ukraine is not resolved - Inflation is still present - Some central banks are stopping their support for the markets, while raising key rates. .💡 Be careful though: The markets are coming to major resistance areas. .💡 A little background: -> The market downturn had started long before the Ukrainian crisis -> The problems of inflation were at work long before Ukraine and could be compared to the inflation that has followed the end of Bretton Woods in 1971 which saw a resurgence of inflation before it accelerated with the oil shock of 1973.
