In this market where investors sentiment has an increasingly strong influence over stock prices, retail investors focusing on business fundamentals are uncommon but can use these sentiment-driven prices fluctuations to their advantage as those provide attractive entry-points to quality investments. $TWLO (Twilio Inc A) is an amazing founder-lead business which has consistently been priced at a premium over the last few years. However, the stock fell out of favor of investors after the most recent earnings showed a “decline” in organic growth which was down from 47-54% in the previous 4 quarters to 38%. It is important to note that including its most recent acquisitions of Zipwhip & Segment the yoy growth was a stellar 65% while the company has a track record of strong execution when it comes to acquiring and integrating businesses. Talking about Segment, not only will this acquisition boost Twilio’s growth in the years to come but it will also nicely expand its products offering. The company already announced its new Twilio Engage platform which will enable businesses to personalize messages based on customer behavior and therefore make those messages more relevant by leveraging the integration of Twilio’s core messaging services with Segment’s customer data platform. While the company enjoys a strong leadership in the Entreprise and B2C communication software market, some analysts seem to fear its lack of optionality. I personally have full confidence in its CEO (Jeff Lawson) vision and willingness to use technology to build a better future. Notably, Twilio recently updated its mission from “Fuel the future of communications” to “Unlock the imagination of Builders” which implies a future expansion beyond its current communication products. As a final note, I am generally more bullish on companies offering platforms which enable existing actors of specific industries to do their job in a most efficient way rather than those trying to replace existing actors. Examples include $SHOP (Shopify Inc.) in E-commerce, $TTD (Trade Desk Inc) in advertising, $U (Unity Software Inc.) in game development, $ADSK (Autodesk, Inc.) in conputer aided design.. With its suite of products enabling developers to build customized communication channels, Twilio definitely falls into this category.
