META's Big Breakout | Turning AI Capex Into a Cash Machine After a difficult stretch, META just posted one of its strongest single-day moves in a long time, closing near $613, up roughly 9% on the day. What's driving it: - Reports indicate Meta is developing a cloud business to generate revenue from its excess AI computing capacity, giving investors a new lens on its heavy infrastructure spending. This directly addresses the market's main concern: that AI capex was pure cost with no clear payoff. The company is reportedly following SpaceX's approach of selling excess compute, with deals already in place (i.e. Anthropic paying $1.25B per month and Google $920M per month for capacity). - The infrastructure behind this is substantial. Roughly 1.6GW of AI compute secured from Crusoe across Texas and Missouri, alongside a $21B CoreWeave deal, a 5GW Hyperion campus, and 2,609MW of nuclear power agreements. - Fundamentals support the move since Q1 2026 revenue reached $56.3B, up 33% year over year, with $22.9B in operating income. Free cash flow was around $13.2B even after nearly $19B in capex. There are also diversification efforts underway, including a planned $900M stake in Indian fintech Cred, with Cred's founder set to lead WhatsApp. On the other side Meta is reportedly considering a major equity raise to support its AI ambitions, with 2026 capex guidance now as high as $145B, raising dilution and free-cash-flow concerns among institutional investors. Regulatory pressure around youth safety is also building.
