Dear Copiers and Followers This month I'm covering Meta balancing between near-term financial dominance and long-term AI execution risk. Metaโ€™s core business consists of FoA (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Threads) which generate revenue through advertising and Reality Labs which include augmented and virtual reality hardware and services allowing users to feel part of experience rather than observers (e.g. Ray-Ban smart glasses). ๐—™๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜€ Metaโ€™s underlying business is incredibly healthy with dual-engine growth in ads impressions jumping 19% y-o-y in Q1 and 12% increase in average price. More precise targeted ads are achieved through โ€˜Advantage+โ€™. Revenue soared to $56.3 billion and despite massive spending it maintained 41% operating margin. Meta raised its full-year 2026 Capital Expenditure guidance to a staggering $125 billion to $145 billion. Unlike Microsoft (Azure), Google (Google Cloud), or Amazon (AWS), Meta is building all this multi-billion-dollar computing capacity strictly for itself. It does not rent out cloud space to other businesses. ๐—ฅ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ธ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘’ ๐ถ๐‘Ž๐‘๐ธ๐‘ฅ ๐‘’๐‘ฅ๐‘’๐‘๐‘ข๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘› ๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘˜ โ€“ massive infrastructure spending squeezing cash flow and Meta cannot easily offset its infrastructure costs like is peers as it is building a private AI sovereign state. ๐‘’๐‘”๐‘ข๐‘™๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฆ ๐‘ก๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘ โ€“ legal pressures are mounting regarding platform harm, the EU AI Act and potential intellectual property claims. ๐‘†๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘ข๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘› ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐‘”๐‘’๐‘œ๐‘”๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘โ„Ž๐‘–๐‘ โ„Ž๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘‘๐‘ค๐‘–๐‘›๐‘‘๐‘  โ€“ active user momentum is dependent on localized internet and subject to tighter platform restrictions. CapEx overruns are balanced with a 10% workforce reduction and restructuring of roles into AI which risks internal friction, morale and operational disruption. The market is valuing Meta today on its massive AI spending today, while completely discounting the revenue that spending will generate tomorrow. ๐‘‰๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘ข๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘› โ€“ the stock is trading at a PE of 18 if the losses of Reality Labs is stripped out and has 30% y-o-y growth, which is a fair amount of safety. Meta is trading at R632.51 with the Wallstreet consensus target of $840 โ€“ 32% potential upside. See the DCF in the image at lower growth rates for the safety margin. The current WACC is 11.25, but due to the current high beta I used a lower WACC. ๐ด๐‘‘๐‘ฃ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘”๐‘’+ ๐ด๐ผ - already paying off by optimizing ads for millions of businesses with a 6% boost in add efficiency for merchants using it. ๐น๐‘ข๐‘›๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘›๐‘” โ€“ Meta is self-funding its infrastructure investment and doesnโ€™t need to take on expensive debt. ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ Mark Zuckerberg has a proven track record of over-investing early in shifts that Wall Street doesn't initially understandโ€”we saw it with Mobile in 2012, with Stories/Reels, and we are seeing it now with AI infrastructure. I am viewing this 20% pullback as a textbook buying opportunity. We are expanding our position here, backed by a core business trading at just 18x forward earnings and an ad engine that continues to print cash. What is your take on META? Letโ€™s discuss.
