๐— ๐—ข๐—ฅ๐—ก๐—œ๐—ก๐—š ๐—จ๐—ฃ๐——๐—”๐—ง๐—˜ Global markets moved higher yesterday as optimism grew around a potential reopening of U.S. federal agencies. European indices gained just over 1% in several markets, while the S&P 500 closed up 1.5% and the Nasdaq added 2.3%. Asian markets are mostly higher this morning, although the Nikkei is down 0.4%. In fixed income, U.S. yields ticked slightly higher while European yields moved lower. The U.S. dollar strengthened, the Japanese yen continued to weakenโ€”hitting a nine-month low. Gold has pushed clearly above 4,000 USD per ounce, its highest level in three weeks. Oil is pulling back this morning, with Brent trading just below 64 USD after yesterdayโ€™s rise. Today is Veterans Day in the U.S.; stock markets remain open, but the bond market is closed. The Senate passed legislation yesterday to fund federal agencies through 30 January 2026, paving the way for a broad reopening. The bill now heads to the House, where the Speaker plans to bring it to a vote on Wednesday before it goes to the President for signature. ๐——๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฎ ๐——๐—ฒ๐—น๐˜‚๐—ด๐—ฒ โ€“ ๐—ข๐—ฟ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐˜†๐—ฏ๐—ฒ ๐—ก๐—ผ๐˜ With a reopening in sight, attention turns to the economic data that has been held back for more than a month. The key questions are when it will be releasedโ€”and how reliable it will be. The September employment report was likely completed before the shutdown and should be straightforward. Octoberโ€™s report, which is largely register-based, should also be manageable. Survey-based releases can partly be reconstructed afterward, but CPI is trickier since it depends on physical price collection at specific times. We may therefore see imputed calculations to bridge missing observations. In short, the data flow will return, but the first wave may be patched togetherโ€”still better than having no data at all.
