2025 YTD Portfolio Performance: My portfolio: +3.92% S&P500: +2.93% 1st Feb 2025 Market Weekly Update: U.S. stocks ended a volatile week mostly lower, though the Dow Jones Industrial Average managed a modest gain, marking its third consecutive week of growth. The Nasdaq Composite took a sharp hit on Monday as tech stocks tumbled following the emergence of DeepSeek, a Chinese AI developer. DeepSeek’s release of an energy-efficient open-source language model sparked competitive concerns, leading to a nearly 17% drop in NVIDIA’s stock. Despite the tech sell-off, earnings reports helped lift markets later in the week. Companies representing approximately 40% of the S&P 500 Index’s market capitalization reported results, with several large-cap tech companies, including Meta Platforms and Apple, delivering positive surprises. Apple’s stock rebounded after reporting earnings that slightly exceeded expectations, despite an iPhone sales miss. Investors focused on Apple’s rising gross margin and optimistic revenue forecast, particularly in its services segment. Visa also contributed to market optimism, climbing 2.1% on Friday after surpassing earnings and revenue estimates. The company reported a 9% year-over-year increase in payments volume and projected high single-digit to low double-digit revenue growth in the current quarter. Heading into the weekend, geopolitical tensions resurfaced as President Trump threatened to impose 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico starting the next day. The announcement briefly sent major indexes lower, as industries like automobiles, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and homebuilding faced potential negative impacts. Gas prices were also expected to rise. However, markets quickly stabilized, and overnight trading remained positive despite slight increases in Treasury yields and the dollar, which may have reflected concerns over the tariff policy. That is all I could summarise about what happened in the stock market last week. Have a great weekend! $VOOV (Vanguard S&P 500 Value ETF)
