With ongoing wars and risk of more war in the world, many different investments are at extra risk. To partially counter war risk, it can make good sense to have companies in the Aerospace & Defense industry in one’s portfolio. For good countries to remain safe – it is important to buy good military products and services. These have historically best been delivered by companies rather than being built directly by governments. $AVAV (AeroVironment Inc.) deliver a wide range of advanced defense systems including loitering munitions, drones, counter-drone weapons, satellite communications, and related products and services. As drones have become more important on battlefields, these have seen impressive sales. With Red Dragon and HaloSwarm from AV, they’ve put themselves in a top tier category of providers of not just the equipment and adjacent services, but also the AI that guides them. I invested in AV with a lot of concern over whether they’d be able to develop products like these. But they’re here and they work. So it’s been demonstrated to me that they have the capability. Likely, we’re in the take-off period for an industry of many different Red Dragon and HaloSwarm-like offerings. There will likely be strong organic growth for many years to come. With a clear path to much higher profitability based on good old reliable economics of scale – this makes them an extra-interesting company.
