One picture: Jean-Claude, 55, a €400k house, one kid. Do nothing, and the kid one day inherits a €58,000 tax bill, and if he doesn't have €58k sitting around, he gets to sell the house in order to keep the house. Or: one signature at the notaire today, nothing about Jean-Claude's life changes , same house, same income from it ,and the bill drops to €18,000. Then one line in the tax code lets him make even that his problem instead of the kid's. Start early enough and the whole number is zero.
