BFLY - How Midjourney’s making this a huge play Midjourney (yes, the AI image generation company) has built an 'MRI' imaging product. Butterfly Networks: The MRI was invented in the 1970s. Compute is now a million times cheaper yet MRI costs haven't dropped. Why? Partly due to regulatory capture and partly because it relies on the brute-force physics of a (huge) supercooled magnet. Traditional ultrasound has the same problem - piezoelectric crystals, hand-tuned to specific frequencies, a different probe for every depth. Butterfly Network makes ultrasound on chips. The butterfly effect: Instead of fragile crystals, they etched thousands of microscopic transducers (CMUTs) directly onto a standard silicon wafer - the same foundries that make your smartphone chip. Cost of the sensor drops from tens of thousands of dollars to almost nothing. The raw signal is noisy (because the sensor is small) - but with a lot of compute it generates higher fidelity than traditional ultrasound/MRI, with a tiny machine (in comparison) and for an order of magnitude cheaper. Cheap sensor + massive compute beats expensive sensor + tiny compute. 𝗠𝗶𝗱𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝘁: In late 2025, Midjourney signed a $25M licensing deal ($15M upfront + $10M annual) (I think the total life time is closer to $75M though). Midjourney's entire core skill is turning noisy, unstructured data into perfect high-fidelity images and this is their first step in the physical world. It's likely this will open up a whole new (huge) market, of imaging machine companies - all powered by Butterfly chips. The leading edge of MRI, Ultrasound and longevity, it's a large TAM, with a similar sort of impact to GLP-1's $BFLY (Butterfly Network Inc.)
