Berkshire Hathaway's $BRK.B (Berkshire Hathaway Inc) investment in Alphabet still feels unusual to me. Although Warren Buffett recently said that he initiated the position, I'm not entirely convinced the idea reflected his traditional investment style. Alphabet $GOOG (Alphabet) has become increasingly capital-intensive as the AI race accelerates, with tens of billions of dollars being invested into data centers, chips, and AI infrastructure each year. While Alphabet undoubtedly possesses an exceptional competitive moat, its future returns are becoming more dependent on continued technology investment and execution in an industry evolving at an unprecedented pace. That seems quite different from the capital-light, highly predictable businesses Buffett has historically preferred. One possibility is that Buffett now views Alphabet differently—similar to how he has invested in capital-intensive businesses like railroads and utilities—seeing AI infrastructure as a long-term strategic asset rather than simply a technology expense. Even so, the investment represents a noticeable evolution from his classic playbook. $SPX500 $NSDQ100
