2025 YTD Portfolio Performance: My portfolio: +7.69% S&P500: +2.62% 22/2/25 Market Weekly Update: U.S. stock markets experienced a volatile, holiday-shortened week, ultimately closing lower despite hitting record highs midweek. After a positive start on Tuesday, the S&P 500 set new highs on both Tuesday and Wednesday. However, losses in the latter half of the week erased earlier gains, with investor sentiment shifting due to geopolitical concerns and economic uncertainty. President Trump’s efforts to mediate the Russia-Ukraine conflict, along with his announcement of potential tariffs on automobiles, pharmaceuticals, and lumber, contributed to market unease, though details on the tariffs remained sparse. A major turning point came on Thursday after Walmart released its fourth-quarter earnings report. While the retail giant exceeded expectations for the past quarter, its cautious outlook for the year raised concerns about consumer spending and broader economic health. This followed a Commerce Department report from the previous week showing the steepest drop in retail sales in nearly two years. Walmart’s stock fell 6.53% on Thursday, triggering a broader pullback in consumer-related stocks. Despite record highs earlier in the week, markets appeared to be losing momentum, with gains occurring on lower-than-average trading volume. The recent dip suggests a phase of consolidation and potential market choppiness. While consumer-related stocks declined on fears of slowing demand, investors showed resilience, with many adopting a "buy the dip" strategy. Looking ahead, key economic data could influence market direction. The January Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge, will be released next Friday. Nvidia’s earnings report on Wednesday will also be closely watched. Additionally, reports on January existing home sales and February’s U.S. manufacturing and services PMI data could provide further insight, particularly given ongoing challenges in the housing market. That is all I could summarise about what happened in the stock market last week. Have a great weekend! $VOOV (Vanguard S&P 500 Value ETF)
