Last year in May, Amazon announced that it was planning to buy MGM studios for $8.5 billion. This got the attention of FTC which claims Amazon is using anti-competitive practices and dims this deal as an illegal way for Amazon to broaden its array of products. Amazon contradicted this by claiming that it has already complied with the necessary documents needed for the deal. This deal has caused other points of concern, especially on the eligibility of $AMZN (Amazon.com Inc) to own MGM. One of the points of concern challenging the eligibility is regarding their streaming capabilities. Amazon claims that it has 200 million Amazon Prime subscribers but on recent findings, it was believed that this is not the case and that the huge number comes as a result of individuals having Prime membership which allows them to access Amazon Prime. This means that Amazon doesn't have the level of influence they claim they have and numbers would be different if Prime was a stand-alone product. This deal is further making Hollywood and shareholders nervous because they do not know the plans Amazon has with the studio, which fuels a lot of uncertainty. Adding to this fuel is the fact that Amazon doesn't have enough experience and any titles it has on the streaming services, have been acquired. But when it is all said and done, the shareholders and the Hollywood community are hoping that Amazon can treat MGM as a stand-alone brand such as in the case of Pixar and Marvel which are under $DIS (Walt Disney) . In light of this, Amazon continues to insist that they want to use MGM as a library to remake TV shows and movies and win Oscars. How Amazon is planning to profit from this acquisition remains unknown, but one thing is for certain, we will know what the FTC decides soon. Translate
