That meant walking for over 5 hours daily, waking up early in the morning. The day I walked the most, 30 km, I spent over 8 hours walking through nature. During those many hours, I could reflect on many things, but this is what I thought about investing: 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭: The first day I walked 20km. I still had energy for more, but I stuck to the plan. You may feel strong, but this is not a sprint, this is a marathon. And you need to hold on for many days. A few days later, pain started hitting and I was thankful that I didn’t push my body to the limit the first day. The same happens with investing. It is a long-term commitment. You may feel strong and confident, and may even think you can use leverage to increase your returns. But when things turn ugly, you will be thankful that you stuck to your plan and strategy. 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 On the third or fourth day, I met with a man who had walked over 800km. He came all the way from the border with France. Walking. I was impressed. But the next day, my wife and I saw him walking in the wrong direction. He missed a sign, but luckily we saw him. I whistled as hard as I could, so he looked back and came the right way. This was a rainy day, by the way, so the visibility was low. But even after walking 800km, you can commit a mistake. Needless to say, he walked much faster than us. But 20 minutes later, he stopped waiting for us. He didn’t know if he was wrong again. He was right. And he had been right for 800km before that, until his mistake. But he felt insecure and thought he was wrong all the time. We told him to follow the road, since we didn’t have to get into nature that day. He kept walking with confidence that day. In investing, mistakes also happen. But you can’t think that you are wrong all the time after you commit one mistake. Instead, study what has gone wrong and keep moving forward. Learn from your mistakes, but don’t get paralyzed. Have you ever walked long distances? Would you like to do it in the future?
