Top OpenAI talent from China joins Meta as Zuckerberg bolsters AI team in tech battle 👉 The expertise of Chinese researchers in artificial intelligence (AI) is in the spotlight, as US tech giant $META (Meta Platforms Inc) has recruited four leading scientists from OpenAI to enhance its competitive edge in the global AI race. 👉 Meta’s hiring of Zhao Shengjia, Ren Hongyu, Yu Jiahui and Bi Shuchao, reported by US tech news outlet The Information, was partially confirmed by Alexandr Wang, head of Meta’s AI unit and former CEO of Scale AI, in a social media post over the weekend. 👉 Wang expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with the four researchers “towards superintelligence”. Meta and OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment. 👉 As of Monday, the researchers had kept their OpenAI titles in their social media profiles. The recruitment, also reported by Bloomberg News, comes as Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg invests billions of dollars to attract top talent. 👉 According to OpenAI founder and CEO Sam Altman, Meta has offered bonuses of up to US$100 million to entice engineers to switch companies. Earlier this month, Meta acquired a 49 per cent stake in Scale AI for US$14.2 billion to bring Wang on board. 👉 The hiring highlights the depth of Chinese talent at leading American AI firms. All four researchers share a similar academic trajectory, having completed their undergraduate education at prestigious Chinese universities before pursuing further studies in the US, according to their LinkedIn profiles and social media accounts. 👉 Zhao graduated from Tsinghua University in 2016 and later studied computer science at Stanford University. In 2022, he joined OpenAI as a technical staff member. 👉 Ren earned his bachelor’s degree from Peking University in 2018 and continued his studies at Stanford from 2018 to 2023, during which he interned at Nvidia, Google and Apple. 👉 According to his LinkedIn page, he is the creator of OpenAI’s o3-mini and o1-mini, and a foundational contributor to the landmark reasoning model, OpenAI o1, as well as a core contributor to GPT-4o. 👉 Yu graduated from the School of the Gifted Young at the University of Science and Technology of China before obtaining a doctorate in computer science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. 👉 He has been the head of OpenAI’s Perception team since October 2023 and previously worked as a researcher at Google’s AI subsidiary, DeepMind, where he co-led projects on the company’s large language model, Gemini. 👉 Bi graduated from Zhejiang University before earning a master’s degree in statistics and a doctorate in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley. He joined OpenAI in May 2024 as head of multimodal post-training after serving as tech lead manager at Google from 2013 to 2019. 👉 Earlier this month, Zuckerberg also added Trapit Bansal, a former OpenAI researcher, to the Meta AI superintelligence team, along with researchers Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov and Zhai Xiaohua from OpenAI’s Zurich branch. 👉 In another example showing the global recognition of Chinese talent in AI development, US chip giant Nvidia recently hired two prominent AI experts from China: Zhu Banghua and Jiao Jiantao, both Tsinghua alumni. They announced their new positions on social media, sharing photos of themselves with Jensen Huang, the company’s founder and CEO.
