As a holder of both $AAPL (Apple) and $GOOG (Alphabet), I believe this as a mutually beneficial move. Siri has been Apple's soft spot for years, and the gap with popular LLMs has only been growing. The only reason why I'm still holding Apple is that I was confident they were going to solve it, either through an acquisition or a partnership.
This partnership doesn't mean relying 100% on Gemini. They are saying clearly that the next generation of their Foundation Models will be based on Gemini, and that it will feed into Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri. I believe Apple can strike the right balance between on-device AI (for speed and privacy) and delegation to a cloud-based Gemini (without the friction of the current ChatGPT integration).
In the same way Apple didn't need to control search engines to succeed, I believe they don't need to fully control the model. This partnership allows Apple to focus on what they do best, selling some of the world's most popular devices.
For Google, the upside is straightforward. Gemini moves from being one of several model options in the market to being embedded under a default assistant on a massive device base. Even without knowing the commercial terms, that kind of placement tends to compound.
We still only have a few details about the deal, so we'll have to wait. I believe Apple will either announce a special event or wait until WWDC in June to showcase it.
