All spreads are applied “round-trip”

(You are charged this percent when you buy, but the fee is adjusted when you sell)

What is a spread?

A spread is the fee we collect based on the difference between the bid and the offer price, which may fluctuate in times of high volatility. In other words, it’s a small percentage added to your transaction, and it can vary a little based on market conditions.

How do eToro’s spreads compare to others?

Most other brokers charge a spread on both the buy and the sell of an asset, but we only charge one spread, first charged when you buy the asset and adjusted when you sell it.

Psst… if this is confusing, don’t worry; read on to understand how our spreads work.

How do eToro spreads work?

To give you an example of how our spreads work, we’ll use bitcoin. Our bitcoin spread is actually one of the cheapest available. We charge 0.75%* of the FINAL price you sell bitcoin for.

So, let’s say you buy 1 bitcoin for $10,000. First, we add $75 to that transaction (0.75% of $10,000 = $75).* NOTE: The spread is added to the total purchase price, so if you select $10,000 worth of bitcoin, you’ll only really be purchasing $10,000 – $75 worth.

Then, if the price of bitcoin increases to, say, $12,000, and you’d like to sell it, we’d include an extra $15 to that sale. Here’s why: because our 0.75% applies to the FINAL price, which in this example is $12,000 (0.75% of $12,000 = $90), and because you already paid $75 when you bought the bitcoin, you only have to pay the remaining $15 when you sell ($75 + $15 = $90).

This kind of “price adjustment” may be novel, but it has its benefits. Like, let’s say the price of bitcoin went down in the last example…

If you sell your 1 bitcoin when the price is, say, $8,000, you’d actually get money back! Our spread of 0.75% applies to the FINAL price of the sell (0.75% of $8,000 is $60). So, you’d receive a $15 refund.
