The Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund is an ETF that aims to replicate the investment results, constituting price and yield before expenses, of publicly traded utility companies listed on the Select Sector Index. This exchange traded fund was launched on 16 December 1998 and is administered by State Street Global Advisors (SSGA) Funds Management, Inc. SSGA Funds Management is based in Boston, Massachusetts, and operates internationally. As of December 2021, this asset management company has 30 locations worldwide.

The fund uses a replication strategy to track the performance of the Select Sector Index. Generally, this non-diversified ETF invests 95%, if not all, of its assets in the securities contained in the mentioned index. The Select Sector Index comprises securities of companies that specialise in electrical utilities, water utilities, multi-utilities, independent power sources and generation, renewable electricity generators, and gas utilities. The Utilities Select Secor SPDR ETF exclusively invests in utilities in the United States.

The inclusion of companies in the Select Sector Index relies on general industry classifications as defined by the Standard & Poor (S&P) 500 Composite Stock Index, commonly known as the S&P 500. With the base currency as US dollars, the fund trades on the NYSE using the XLU ticker.
