The largest hearing aid retailer in the world, Milan-based Amplifon, was founded in 1950. The company went public in 2001, and is available on the Borsa Italiana as AMP.MI. Amplifon has a long and storied history of using an aggressive acquisition strategy in order to expand its global operations. Some notable acquisitions include the Sonus Corporation in 2002, National Hearing Centers in 2003 and National Hearing Care in 2010. However, its largest purchase was that of Catalan-based GAES in 2017 for 528 million euros.
44.9% of company ownership is currently in the hands of Susan Carol Holland, Amplifon chairwoman and daughter of Algernon Charles Holland, the company’s founder. Holland was a remarkable man, who founded a remarkable company. He was raised in Argentina, later joining the British Military during the Second World War, earning a Bronze Star for his efforts from the United States in 1948. He started Amplifon only two years later.
Amplifon stock is part of the FTSE MIB index. The Italy- based, British -owned stock exchange, consists of the 40 most traded stocks on the Italian stock market. Amplifon stock value has outperformed the FTSE MIB on several occasions in the past.
