American Water Works Co Inc is the largest water and wastewater utility company in the US. It was incorporated to its present form in 1936 but has a history that dates back to 1886. Its headquarters are located in Camden, New Jersey. Operating through several subsidiaries, it provides drinking water and water for home use to millions of customers in North America. Its coverage includes 1,700 communities in 16 states in the US and some parts of Canada. The company also provides wastewater to residential apartments, fire services, industries, commercial consumers, public authorities, schools, and universities.

American Water Works Co. Inc operate 79 water treatment plants, 150 wastewater plants, and 530 ground water treatment plants. In addition, it manages approximately 53,200 miles of pipe for the distribution, transmission, and collection of water. The American Water Works Company, another subsidiary, provides a range of consumer-facing services including water and sewer lines protection, in-home emergency plumbing service, electric lines, heating and cooling systems, and water heater and power surge protection.
