The Channel has long been a staple of international relations in Europe; and symbolises cooperation between European countries. In this case, it represents a joint effort between France and England. But despite its cultural and political importance, perhaps the most notable event in Channel Tunnel history came in the form of joyriding. In 2009, Formula One driver John Surtees became the first person to drive a car through the tunnel. It was reported that he stopped several times to sign his name on the tunnel walls.
