Its origins date back to the late nineteenth century when workmen for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) found natural gas while digging a water well. The company operates in the discovery, development, production, and selling of natural gas, oil and natural gas liquids via its subsidiaries. Its segments include United States of America Operations, Canadian Operations, and Market Optimization. The company's primary assets include the Permian in west Texas, Anadarko in west-central Oklahoma, and the Montney in north-eastern British Columbia and north-western Alberta. Other upstream assets include the Eagle Ford in south Texas, the Bakken in North Dakota, the Uinta in central Utah, the Duvernay in west-central Alberta, the Horn River in north-eastern British Columbia, and the Wheatland in southern Alberta.

Ovintiv common shares trade under the ticker ECA on the NYSE. In 2022, the business expects to invest $1.5bn on oil and gas infrastructure innovation in order to enhance its operations.
