Colruyt is undoubtedly a pioneer in Belgian retail, and perhaps the world. Its numerous firsts include being the first supermarket in Belgium to use punch cards for employees. The company was also the first to operate an unmanned petrol station in Belgium. In 1987, Colruyt became the first retailer in Belgium to use barcodes for stock management and logistics purposes.
