Southern Copper Corporation is a global metallurgic company with mining ventures in Peru and Mexico, as well as exploration facilities in Chile. Its operations also include smelting, milling, and refining. The company employs modern mining and processing methods and technologies, including global positioning systems. Originally incorporated in 1952, the current incarnation of the company came into being when Minera Mexico acquired Southern Peru Copper Corporation in 2005. As of December 2021, the company employs 12,000 people. Its headquarters are located in Phoenix, Arizona.
Southern Copper Corporation produces copper, molybdenum, lead, zinc, silver, and coal. Mining and production in Mexico is conducted by Minera Mexico, a holding company and a subsidiary of Southern Copper. Minera Mexico has three subsidiary groups: Mexicana de Cobre S.A. de C.V., Industrial Minera Mexico S.A. de C.V., and Operador de Minas e Instalaciones Mineras S.A. de C.V. In Peru, the company operates the Cuajone and Toquepala mines in the Andes and a refinery in the city of Ilo. Southern Copper also has a railroad and port facilities for use by its metal production operations.
