Managed by BlackRock, the iShares Silver Trust seeks to track the overall performance of the price of silver on the US stock market. The fund gives exposure to the day-to-day movement of the silver bullion price in America and is based predominately in the United States. The fund was launched in 2006.
While the fund does track the performance of silver, it does not actively operate to obtain a profit from changes in the price of silver. Since the iShares Silver Trust is not an investment company or a commodity pool, it is not subject to the same regulatory requirements as other mutual funds and is not a portfolio of many different assets, like other ETFs. Instead, the fund mimics the commodity's price almost identically and is meant to offer a more accessible way of gaining exposure to the price of silver without having to purchase the physical metal.
While the ETF is domiciled in the United States, it is also available for purchase in Chile, Mexico, and Germany. iShares Silver Trust can be found under the ticker SLV and is publicly traded on the NYSE.
