As part of its mission to match up paying customers and freelance workers, the company focuses on particular labour markets such as India, the Philippines, and the US. There are around 8,000 different skills listed on the Upwork marketplace, stretching across more than 60 categories, including sales and marketing, customer service, data science and analytics, design and creative, web, mobile, and software development.

It also provides access to remote communication and collaboration, payment protection, and invoicing. Its marketplace offerings include Upwork Basic, Upwork Plus, Upwork Enterprise, and Upwork Payroll, in addition to managed and internet escrow agency services. Upwork is listed on the NASDAQ under the stock ticker UPWK.
