Considered one of China’s “Big Three Airlines,”China Southern Airlines was created in 1988, a result of an amalgamation of several regional airlines. One of the largest airlines in the world, it has hubs in Beijing and Guangzhou, serving almost 200 destinations per day. The airline is owned by China Southern Air Holding Company, which is state-owned. The airline trades on both the Hong Kong and Shanghai exchanges.
China Southern Airlines went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 1997. The stock is available for trade on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong as 1055.HK. The airline initiated an additional round of IPO funding in early 2019, for an undisclosed amount.
Rapid expansion has been the recurring theme of China Southern Airlines for the last several decades. The airline reached agreements with American and European aviation officials in 1995 that allowed China Southern to implement international routes, with Amsterdam being its first long-haul route. In 2019, the airline announced a partnership with American Airlines.
