A Bologna-based financial services provider, Unipol Gruppo was founded in 1963 and is owned by an Italian holding company called Finsoe. Unipol, stock ticker UNI.MI, specialises in banking and insurance, holding the distinction of being one of Italy’s largest insurance providers. The company began providing banking services under its own brand in 1998 under the name Unipol Banca. Unipol went public in 1999.
With numerous offices in Italy, including Florence, Milan and Turin, in addition to its Bologna-based headquarters, Unipol has a long and impressive reach inside the Italian market. Unipol also operates in a variety of jurisdictions through its subsidiaries outside of Italy. One such example can be found in Serbia, where Unipol owns the third largest insurance provider, DDOR Novi Sad. Unipol is also heavily invested in the Italian hotel industry, managing a wide a variety of locations.
Despite the preconceived notions of a stoic and reserved corporate culture that some hold towards financial providers, Unipol veers from this stereotype with surprising ownership of the Torre Velasca and Torre Galfa. These Milanese buildings are hardly ancient, constructed in the fifties of the previous century, but still hold cultural significance to the city.
