Whitehaven Coal Limited is a mining company that focusses on the development and management of coal mines in Australia. Operating internationally, Whitehaven Coal has both open cut and underground mining operations. Founded in 1999, the company’s head office is in Sydney, Australia.
Whitehaven Coal produces metallurgical and thermal coal for export. The company’s operations include four mines in the Gunnedah Coal Basin in northwestern New South Wales, including one underground mine at Narrabri and three open cut mines at Maules Creek, Tarrawonga and Werris Creek. Whitehave Coal also maintains washing plants and processing facilities at Maules Creek, Narrabri and Gunnedah, as well as offices in Newcastle and Tokyo. Whitehaven Coal sells its coal internationally, including in China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, New Caledonia, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
In February 2022, Whitehaven Coal discussed the ongoing progress with the Australian government regarding the extension of the Narrabri underground mining project to continue until 2044. In January 2022, the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) recommended it be approved with conditions. The company is publicly traded on the Australian Securities Exchange under the ticker WHC. It has been listed on the exchange since June 2007.
