Cracker Barrel Old Country Store Inc. is an American chain of restaurants and gift stores with a Southern country theme. Operating domestically, the firm was established in 1969 when founder Dan Evans opened the first Cracker Barrel store and restaurant in Lebanon, Tennessee, where the company still has its headquarters today. Cracker Barrel venues are often located near interstate highways, with the original aim being to provide a stop for travellers wanting a nutritious meal and welcoming experience at a reasonable price.
The firm now operates around 665 venues around the US, consisting of restaurants offering a full-service menu with an emphasis on home-style food with a southern influence, alongside traditional country-style stores selling a broad range of homewares, carved furniture, seasonal gifts, toys, clothing, and food and beverage products.
Cracker Barrel acquired Maple Street Biscuit Company in a $36m buy-out in 2019, adding another well-known food outlet to its portfolio. The firm had previously operated another biscuit-focused brand known as Holler and Dash, but the Maple Street buy-out provided it with a stronger, better-known brand to develop. The Maple Street brand is closely aligned with the Cracker Barrel company image, providing a friendly, community feel and focusing primarily on southern-style comfort food. The firm trades on the NASDAQ under the stock ticker CBRL.
