Netflix, Inc. is an American online entertainment and TV production company that offers a subscription streaming service to clients within the USA and internationally. Launched in 1997, the firm offers a library of films, documentaries, and television series through distribution deals with other networks and production companies, as well as its own productions, known as Netflix Originals. The firm has its corporate headquarters in Los Gatos, California.
The company serves a broad customer base with a total of 214 million paid memberships, as of December 2021, in over 190 countries. Netflix enables users to watch unlimited, on-demand, commercial-free content across a wide variety of genres and languages. Content can be accessed via almost any internet-connected device, including computers, smartphones and other mobile devices, smart TVs, and devices such as digital video players and TV set-top boxes.
In the United States, the firm also offers a DVD-by-mail service. The company originally offered third-party content but began producing its own original series and movies in 2013, when it launched the drama series House of Cards. Netflix has now produced more than 1000 original series and films. The firm trades on the NASDAQ under the stock ticker NFLX.
