A food and facilities management provider, headquartered in Paris, Sodexo is one of the largest companies in the world, both in terms of total employees and value of assets. Pierre Bellon founded Sodexo in 1966, in the city of Marseille. The company provides food services to a wide range of sites, including universities, corporations, military bases and prisons. The company was previously called Sodexo Alliance, until a vote by shareholders changed the name.
Sodexo is listed on both the Euronext Paris exchange and the CAC 40 index. The index represents a collection of the most important stocks from the top 100 companies in France according to market capitalisation. Sodexo stock symbol is SW.PA. The company has issued several IPO rounds over the last three decades, including 1983 and 2002.
Despite its extraordinary success, Sodexo has had its fair share of accusations related to morality and ethics. The French company had several run-ins with American students on U.S. university campuses. Students accused the company of malicious behaviour towards employees. Another encounter with negative publicity took place when horse DNA was found in the company’s meat. There has also been condemnation of human rights violations at its catering facilities.
