Upwork is a freelancing platform headquartered in Santa Clara, California, US. Founded in 2013, the company operates internationally and is an online marketplace that enables clients to locate, hire, and pay freelancer workers for various types of projects.

Upwork is listed on the NASDAQ GS under the ticker NASDAQ: UPWK. In late 2020, the stock reached just under $20 per share. As part of its mission to match up paying customers and freelance workers, the company focuses on particular labour markets such as India and the US. There are around 8,000 different skills listed on the Upwork marketplace, stretching across more than 60 categories.

A large rise in UPWK stock prices occurred in September 2020. Overall, prices rose by more than 14%, which was attributed in part to a series of speeches given by the firm’s representatives at various industry events, such as the Global Technology Virtual Conference organised by the bank Citi. One analyst has predicted that the Upwork share price could be affected by the potential for unemployment in the context of a recession.
